Guerra Family of 7
Our story
The SG family is a group of 7 resilient individuals. Their journey has been far from easy, facing many challenges in the last year. From witnessing domestic violence, verbal abuse and homelessness. Up to a few months ago the SG family slept in the streets of LA while mother sat outside the tent to ensure that the family was safe. They decided that it was time for them to make a change and leave the abuse behind. This came with many sleepless nights and worry of what will happen tomorrow .Thankfully with each other and the help of grandmother the family was able to move into a one bedroom/one bathroom motel in South LA. Although, this might not be the ideal situation the SG family has made the best out of it. Mother Ann is the children’s biggest advocate, wanting to ensure that her children are not only physically safe but emotionally healthy as well.
With the support of her mother, grandmother, and oldest daughter Ari (17) they decided to call Aviva for services. In September 2023, Ari (17), Annie (9) and Jessie (8) were able to start therapy. Although the family had no car and had to travel by bus during this time, they made it work. Meeting weekly at a local park and library the family has continuously arrived together after-school to talk, process and take a moment to reflect on their journey. With Mother and Grandmother nearby playing with the younger children (4,2), reading books or finishing homework they always remain together. Many other individuals might have found it difficult to attend therapy, but the SG family has been able to manage the best they can.
Although the family is slowly healing their anger and frustration there are still needs to be met to achieve that. Mother Ann is attending trade school where she wants to enter the construction field will also balancing parenting classes and most recently having to recover from a medical emergency. While Ari continues working hard to graduate from the 12th grade while actively participating in school sports in hopes of going to college next year. While Annie and Jessie work hard at school, completing their homework, spending time with family and friends and ensuring that they remain focused in everything they try to complete . Even though mother has had to learn to balance trade school (construction), parenting classes she continues to be an advocate for their education and is proactive in ensuring that go to local food banks for their basic needs. She even managed to fix her vehicle to have more consistent transportation for her children. The entire family continues to struggle with obtaining household supplies, hygiene products and shoes. While each child has separate needs from wanting shampoo and face wash, to a toy to play with, art supplies, clothing that they can call their own. The SG family remains hopefully that everything will get better with time.
